FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL THERAPY SESSION LOOK LIKE?
Therapy sessions typically last 60 minutes, with 10 minutes in the session allotted for paperwork and preparation. Session length may be longer, depending on our agreed upon treatment goals.
Our first session will involve reviewing your rights and responsibilities as a client, your background, and your current areas of difficulty. Together, we will clarify your initial goals for treatment. After that, each session will be different depending on our goals, and any revisions to them.
Sessions will typically focus on thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and you will typically be asked to practice newly learned skills in between our sessions. This is to make sure you get the most benefit out of our work together.
WHAT IF I AM TOO ______, CAN I WORK WITH A PSYCHOLOGIST?
In my experience, folks either question whether they are too "messed up" or not "messed up" enough to see a psychologist! You do not have to be Goldilocks to benefit from therapy. If you have difficulties in your life that keep you stuck in the way you feel, think, or act, you can likely benefit from working with a psychologist. The initial conversation you have with a psychologist will help you both determine therapy goals, and whether you will be a good fit to work together.
In our work together, if you do not feel a good connection (it happens!) or your difficulties would be better helped by another psychologist or allied professional, I will do my best to facilitate that transition.
HOW MUCH DO YOUR SERVICES COST?
I charge $225 per hour, which is the standard rate for psychologists in BC. Although psychotherapy and assessment services are not covered by the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP), coverage is often available through extended medical healthcare plans (e.g., Pacific Blue Cross).
If you are referred by a third party, such as an insurance company, usually you will not be charged for services as the third party will cover those costs.
I do accept a small number of clients on sliding fee scale, based on need. Please get in touch with me to see if this is available.
